Historic Significance
Dating from the 16th century, the Hacienda was founded in 1556 by Don Diego Marina de Chavez for the raising of livestock. It later pertained to Isabel Moctezuma, daughter of the Emperor Moctezuma II. In 1845 the Hacienda was converted into an important producer of wheat with its own mill which supplied the cities of Mexico and Toluca with this staple. Part of the acueduct which was built to transport water from the Marquesa River still stands. The Hacienda has been the property of Don Luis G. Pliego, Mr. Rebollar and Doctors Luke and Rebollar. Today part of the land has been divided into the residential areas of Hacienda Jajalpa and Hacienda San Martin. Throughout history Hacienda San Martin has been witness to great changes and transformations in the country. It was the scene of Battles during the Reform and the Revolution. During the War of Independence the Hacienda was bastion to the realists who tried to contain the insurgent forces commanded by Don Miguel Hidalgo and the Generals Allende, Aldama, Abasolo and Jimenez. The Battle of the Crosses took place on this site. In recent history the construction of the Hacienda has been restored and converted into a magnificent Restaurant surrounded by lovely gardens and centuries old trees. |
