Historic Significance
In 1684 Don Juan de Sepulveda, a spaniard, received a land grant of
171 hectares from the Royal Audience of the New Spain and created
Hacienda Sepulveda. The property was dedicated to raising cattle and
agricultural products. During the later part of the 18th century the
Neoclassical "Great House" was built.
The Hacienda's proximity to the Camino Real to Zacatecas, a wealthy
mining region of Mexico, led to many historical reunions prior to and
during the Mexican War of Independence. It is said that Miguel Hidalgo
and other insurgent leaders stayed here. The walls of the house have
also been witness to political reunions during the Revolution of 1914
and the Cristero Movement in 1927.
The restoration process began in 1985 and the Hacienda opened as a hotel in 2001.
