Historic Significance
The History of San Gabriel de las Palmas dates back to the year 1529
when Hernán Cortés ordered the construction using semi-circular walls
and vaulted arches.
Once a Franciscan Monastery the monks where forced to leave in 1559
when the Hacienda was converted into a sugar plantation. During the
colonial period it became the largest producer and refinery in Mexico.
Throughout history Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas has been
visited by historical figures including Emiliano Zapata, who installed
his main headquarters here during the Revolution.
In recent years the Hacienda has been converted into an exclusive hotel of luxury and refined taste.
