Historic Significance

La Hacienda de los Morales formed part of the lands conceded to Hernan Cortes by the King of Spain. The first mulberry trees were planted here for the production of silkworms, hence thename "Los Morales" which has endured for more than four centuries.

The Hacienda dates from the 16th century and for many years cultivated agriculture products, produced olive oil and was a flour mill. The property increased through the acquisition of more land and received an abundant flow of water from the Morales River and the Santa Ana Ravine which received the runoff from the Desierto de los Leones.

When the Emperor Maximilian ordered the construction of an avenue to connect Chapultepec Castle and the National Palace, access to the Hacienda became easier.

The beauty of this magnificent construction has been an inspiration to writers and artists alike, and it has played host to illustrious visitors throughout its history.

For the past 39 years La Hacienda de los Morales has been the site of one of the lovliest restaurants in the city and a center of fine cuisine.
