Hacienda de Cortés

Historic Significance

Once known as Hacienda de San Antonio Atlacomulco, the imposing structure of Hacienda de Cortes was built under the orders of Hernan Cortes in 1530. Here Don Martin Cortes, son of the Conqueror of New Spain established an important sugar plantation in 1570.

In years to come the Emporer Maximilian enjoyed visiting the hacienda.

In 1848, Don Lucas Alaman, legal representative of the heirs of the Cortes estate, the Dukes of Monteleone, used advanced techniques to make the hacienda one of the most prosperous sugar plantations in the country. The hacienda was abandoned and destroyed during the Mexican Revolution, not even saved by flying the Italian flag over the property.  After the Revolution the Mexican government paid restitution to the heirs.

Several renown figures aquired the property, but it wasn´t until 1973, under the hands of the present owners that the hacienda opened its doors as a hotel and cultural center.
