Historic Significance
Before the arrival of the Spaniards in the early 16th century, Hacienda Cantalagua formed part of a region known as Contepecatl. The name was changed to Contepec "the place sheltered by the mountain" in 1523.
Hacienda Cantalagua has been built within the walls of what was once known as Hacienda Tepetongo, built for the Viceroy of New Spain, the Count of Fuenclara, and baptized the Hacienda San Juan Bautista Tashi in the year 1744.
During Mexico´s War of Independence the priest Miguel Hidalgo offerred mass here during a brief stay on his way from the historic town of Dolores, Guanajuato, after giving the cry for independence. |
