Historic Significance
This house was built towards the end of the 18th century and pertained to Don Antonio Obregon y de Alcocer, who in 1760 discovered the mother vein of the Valenciana Mine, which contributed to the economic and architectural bonanza of the city of Guanajuato, recognized as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Due to the great riches produced by the mine, Carlos III of Spain named Don Antonio Count of the Valenciana and Viscount of the Mines. The building was used as the Administration Office for the gold and silver mines. The property was adquired by a family member of the present owners who established here a Gallery of the Applied Arts in 1991. The birth of a restaurant on the premises was accidental as the owner was approached by the local Congress to cater a luncheon on the property. Obliged to accede to the request and enlisting the help of the family cook and family recipes, the event was a complete success. This marked a new page in the history of Casa del Conde de la Valenciana. |
