In the prehispanic period, Pátzcuaro was an important ceremonial center for the Purépecha civilization. Patzcuaro is known as picturesque Mexican province with adobe walls and red tile roofs. The Pátzcuaro Lake and islands are inhabited by natives that conserve many of their ancient customs and traditions. Their fishermen are known worldwide for using their famous butterfly nets to capture the local white fish.
